The staff seemed frustrated with each other behind the desk at times, which made things uncomfortable. Breakfast was average, and the shower head kept slipping, so you had to hold it while washing. The room was unbearably hot throughout our two-night stay. The wall unit’s label said it wouldn’t work with the window open, so we shut the window and set it to the lowest setting. It still blew hot air. Reception then told me it was a heater, not air conditioning, and advised me to switch it off. I opened the window, but that didn’t help either. When I went back to ask for a fan, I was told there weren’t any and nowhere nearby to buy one. The response felt dismissive, as if no one was interested in helping. Neither of us slept properly on either night. I spent part of my mum’s 70th birthday trip walking around Salzburg looking for a fan, and eventually bought a small neck fan at a supermarket just to get through the night. We’d come for a relaxing two-night celebration, but the stay wasn’t restful or pleasant, which was especially disappointing for the occasion.

Salzburg was wonderful and we had a great time there, but we wouldn’t stay at this hotel again. It’s about a 20-minute walk to the main part of the city, and the staff were nice, but the place needs work. I think management should spend a night in one of the rooms to see what guests experience. The bathroom had mould on the shower head, some of the tile grout, and the ceiling around the bath. The sink and bath drains were very slow. Wardrobe shelves weren’t secured, so our clothes fell out. The pillows were much too soft, and there were no pillow protectors. One night, a faulty sensor set off the fire alarm at 1:30 a.m., then again at 1:50 and 2:30. Each time we had to evacuate to the car park in our pajamas in -1 degree weather. Staff offered no apology or compensation.

The hotel is right beside the main railway station, with buses, trains, and trams all connected there, which made getting around very easy. I had a relaxing, superb stay at the Holiday Inn Salzburg, and the service was great. Rada at reception was especially warm and welcoming. She helped us and suggested places to visit and the best times to travel. I wish I’d had a chance to talk with her more, but I had to move on to innsbruck. The rest of the reception team were nice too. Thumbs up from me!

We stayed three days and our room was never cleaned. At reception, one staff member didn’t greet us properly, didn’t mention the free tickets, and said there wasn’t an adapter we could borrow for charging. Wondira was very kind and helpful. She got us an adapter and the tickets, and we really appreciated her support.

The staff were efficient and helpful, but this wasn’t one of my better HI stays. The bathroom basin was cracked. The shower had strong pressure and a good temperature, though the screen over the bath was too short to keep water off the floor. The website mentioned that the bar would be closed, but not that there’d be no restaurant except at breakfast. We had to walk a long way in freezing weather to find dinner.
