Hotel Alpenland

The ski-in, ski-out access was a real plus, though getting to the shops and other restaurants meant walking down into central Obergurgl and back up again. The hotel itself was well equipped and well run, with a lovely team, although English support in the restaurant and bar was limited outside the managers. It was just my 12-year-old son and me, and we booked one of the last rooms available in Obergurgl for January 2 through Booking.com. Only an apartment was available, which suited us since skiing was the point of the trip. On the second day we learned that apartment bookings did not include any room cleaning during our three-night stay. That wasn't a disaster, but it surprised me when we were paying just under EUR 600 a night without breakfast or half board. Reception wouldn't budge on the cleaning policy. We tried dinner once and found it far too expensive for the quality. My son had breakfast once and thought it was very good, generous, and good value. I'd stay again, but I'd check the details in advance.

The food and drinks were a highlight. A couple of the evening dishes were more adventurous than we wanted, but there were always other choices. It was still nice to sample some local food, and the starter buffet before the soup, main course, and dessert was excellent. We expected a nice hotel, but it turned out even better than that. The owners clearly look after the place, and it has a good mix of modern touches and traditional Austrian character. Our room didn't have quite the same impact as the shared spaces, but it was lovely, spacious, and comfortable. We'd definitely choose it again if we come back to Obergurgl.

We had a wonderful family ski week just before Christmas. The hotel was small, cosy, friendly, and welcoming, with great food and a fabulous spa. The boot room was heated, the equipment was excellent, and the ski-in, ski-out setup meant no trudging around in ski boots. We'd come back in a heartbeat.

The bedroom decor could use a refresh, but the shared areas are beautifully kept. Staff were knowledgeable and attentive, and we always felt valued. Ski-in, ski-out access is excellent, and the hotel is well placed in the resort. Breakfast was excellent, and there were enough dinner choices to suit everyone. Recommended x
