Auldington Hotel

The rooms have been renovated quite a bit, despite the building itself being really old. I had a good stay, and there’s plenty of parking on site, so it works well for a short visit. Service was good, though there weren’t many staff available and late check-in isn’t offered, so make sure you arrive before staff finish. I’d have liked a front room with a balcony for the city view. At check-in they keep your bank card details and may deduct an amount if you damage the property or its items, so read the form before signing.

The garden is lovely, there’s plenty of parking, and the old place is pleasant to stay in, about a 10 minute walk from the city centre. My two missing stars are because the owner insists on writing down credit card details and keeping them on paper. I saw details from the last six check-ins lying on the desk, and someone dishonest could easily have photographed them. Even after I challenged the owner, he stuck to the policy. I contacted Booking.com about my booking, and they weren’t impressed either. They said they’d warn the property manager and didn’t support this practice. I refused to give my details. Nobody should!

James gave us a warm welcome and made sure several times in advance that we knew check-in had to be before 7pm. We appreciated the clear communication. We only stayed one night, but enjoyed the clean, spacious room with all the necessary amenities, especially the lovely deep bath. The building is cute, with communal lounge areas and a balcony overlooking Launceston. The rose garden is beautiful too. James runs the place on his own and hasn’t had a day off in many months.

James was very understanding and generous when I realised I’d booked the wrong dates. He rebooked me without an extra charge. The historical hotel is in a quiet area, with lovely balcony views, a very clean room and a comfortable bed. The staff were accommodating, and I’ll definitely stay here again when I visit Launceston.
