The Marco Polo

We really enjoyed our stay. The room had lovely furnishings and a modern beachy feel, and it was great value for the price. The staff were lovely, very helpful with booking, and accommodating when we checked in late. I'd recommend it.

Our car broke down on the way to Brisbane, so we booked here at the last minute. We were pretty upset, but the staff were so good to us. The rooms and grounds were spotless, modern, and had everything we needed, and we had flexible parking. The bed was unbelievably comfortable. We even took a photo of the pillows so we could find the same ones for home. Really glad we stayed, and we’ll be back if we’re in the area. Thanks, guys!

The last time I stayed, the room smelled of smoke, there were marks on the bedding, and noise carried on into the early hours. I also saw staff smoking just before going in to clean rooms, which didn’t reassure me about hygiene. I have no problem with people partying or playing loud music, as long as they’re considerate. And while people are entitled to smoke, staff with asthma shouldn’t have to pass the smoking area to get to a room, let alone have smoke brought into the room by cleaners. The noise had become a real problem on later visits, with drinking and loud music at night and children running around very early. On another stay, there was only one towel for three guests, and the room didn’t feel as clean or fresh as it used to. My booking also couldn’t be found, even though I’d given all my details earlier that day. Later, I got a call asking when I’d check in, after I’d already collected my keys. It was confusing, and there wasn’t much care or apology. Training for after-hours check-in needs to cover all the details. The trainee knew we were arriving after hours, but didn’t mention a holding fee, a number to call, or where to get the key. I’d stayed at Marco Polo Mackay many times over the years, and it used to be my first choice when travelling north. The previous management were welcoming, professional and accommodating. The rooms were comfortable, the location was convenient, and the place felt safe and pleasant. It’s a shame to see it go downhill, and I hope management can bring back the standard it once had.

We booked easily over the phone while driving into town, and the staff were very friendly. The room was clean, well equipped, and spacious enough for two comfortable chairs to sit and watch TV. A really enjoyable overnight stay.
