The sky is the real show here, especially at sunrise and when the stars come out. We’d happily return. It’s a rustic, simple place, but well equipped, with clean rooms and aircon/heating. Bring your own bedding for the full mattresses, only mattress protectors are supplied. The shared kitchen was very clean and had a large fridge and all the cooking gear we needed, plus indoor and outdoor seating. Showers were spotless and had hot water. There’s a little fire pit and an outdoor bbq too. No mosquitos, but plenty of flies until dusk, and almost no phone service beyond a little Telstra. Bring exact cash for the park fees, since electronic payment isn’t available. As of May 2026, the roads from Mildura and Balranald are sealed except for roughly the last 50km to the Park in either direction, which is graded red dirt. Our two-wheel drive hatchback managed fine in dry weather, but we left a night early to miss the rain forecast for the next morning. Most other guests did likewise, including people with 4WD.

The kitchen is better equipped than most camp kitchens, with a full fridge and freezer, toasters, jaffle makers, a microwave, and enough cutlery and crockery for an army. Gas bbqs are available, and parking is right beside the accommodation. Rooms are basic and practical: one small table and chair, curtains that don’t block much light, and not much room for bags. Still, the aircon works, the beds beat sleeping in a tent, and the bathrooms are clean and functional. The main downside is having to empty the bins yourself.
We got up onto the dunes with the tour, an area the general public can’t access. Phil from Discover Mildura ran a fantastic tour of Mungo park. It was excellent, and lunch and morning tea were included.
At night it’s wonderfully quiet, with amazing stars, and the sunrise and sunset views are hard to beat. We stayed in room 5 with a queen bed and a single, a chair, air con and heating. I’d have liked wall hooks or a shelf in there, as there’s nowhere to put things. The communal kitchen and dining area were useful, and the toilets and showers were extremely clean. The location is fabulous, beside the woodshed, the meeting place/lookout and visitor centre. A small group of kids were there for school holidays, and our child had a blast running around with them. We were comfortable letting them play and wander a little, which they loved. Lance the Ranger was wonderful and very knowledgeable on the guided tour of the Walls of China, which you should book in advance. The park is spectacular. Be ready for flies in sept and high temperatures, and keep food in sealed containers since there’s evidence of mice about.
The Shearers' Quarters are spacious and the beds are comfortable, with air conditioning for hot days. There’s a dining hall inside and another dining area outside, and you can barbeque too. The shared spaces are cleaned every day, which is great. Kitchen is fully appointed, so all we needed was our own groceries to cook. Showers can be hot or cold. Honestly, what else do you need? The facilities are really good, possibly the best accommodation one can get at the Mungo NP.
