It’s a handy base for the nearby hiking trails, and there’s a short walk into town. The heritage railway is just a stone’s throw away, and you can see it from the cottage. We also loved being so close to the Wally Pub for good food and a chat with the locals. We had a great couple of days away from the city. The accommodation is compact, clean and comfortable, and it’s pet friendly, which was a big plus.

Make sure you pack a torch, since there’s very little night lighting in town. The cottage has a lovely outlook over the rail yards, and hearing Stringers Creek burble quietly nearby was delightful. We loved the wood fired heater, though there’s also a reverse-cycle air-conditioner for anyone who’d rather not deal with the fire. It’s a nice little getaway for two.

Stringers Cottage has so much appeal that it feels like stepping back in time. Walhalla is a historic town with plenty to see and do, and this was such a great place for a weekend away. It’s well worth booking if you’re looking for a break, you won’t be disappointed 🙂👍

The view from the kitchen window was the one nice part of our stay. We stayed the weekend of 14 and 15 September 2024, and were very disappointed. At $267.00 per night, it wasn’t worth the price. We knew the cottage was small, but it wasn’t clean. It looked as if someone had only changed the sheets and towels. There were other guests’ asthma puffers in the kitchen and in the bedroom drawers beside the main bed, plus dried orange rice in a plastic container in the fridge. The listing said milk would be provided, but there was none. The oven was filthy, with a putrid tray on the top shelf. The plastic utensils beside the gas cooker had food bits and dust stuck to them, the dinner plates had brown stains running down from the top, and the coffee percolator was filthy. The white cutting board behind the toaster was unhygienic and needed replacing. The toilet wasn’t clean either, and the fireplace hadn’t been cleared after previous guests had used it. The main door didn’t lock properly. You could just push it open, so we had to take our suitcase with us whenever we went out. On the first night, the septic tank outside the front door, over the fence, reeked of sewage, and we could smell it inside. There were gaps under both the front and bathroom doors, letting in cold air. Two thick door sausages would have fixed that. The LED lighting on the path was dim, and the stone tiles were broken. Luckily, we’d brought a torch, since there was no lighting around the cottage, on the driveway or on the road down to town. We won’t be back, and I don’t understand the five star rating. It’s not worth any stars at all. Pictures enclosed.

We spent a fabulous long weekend at Stringers Cottage in February 2017. The weather was beautiful, and we enjoyed bush walking and exploring Walhalla’s historic old town. We’re retired from work, not from life, and as a retired couple we found the cottage very small, romantic and lovely. It had everything we needed, and the best part was that it didn’t have things we didn’t need. It was quaint beyond belief. Thanks, Anna.
