Mata Rocks Resort

It was a good stay overall, and I’d recommend it as a clean, budget-friendly oceanfront option. The rooms were comfortable and clean, the AC worked well, and the small pool was refreshing. The beach bar was convenient, with cold drinks, and free morning coffee from the bar was a welcome touch. There’s a coffee maker in the room but no coffee, which was weird. It’s a 30-minute walk to the town center, but since everyone has a golf cart except us, that wasn’t a problem. It’s very close to the airport. Our one issue was the slow food service, mostly because the bartender seemed to be doing everything: checking people in, getting towels, making drinks, cleaning, and taking food orders. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was cooking too, which may be why it was slow. The beach in front of the hotel isn’t really a beach, but they seem to be trying to fix that by adding sand.

The staff made the trip feel personal, especially Javier, who remembered our names, drinks, and preferences and greeted us by name whenever he saw us. They went above and beyond with the service, and even made sure we had rides to and from the airport. The resort dog, Max, was so friendly and a highlight of the stay. The location is close to town but far enough out to feel secluded. Food was fresh and affordable. We tried several other restaurants around town, but this place had the best fish and chips by far. Every need we had was met and exceeded. I can’t say enough good things about our stay and highly recommend it if you’re in San Pedro.

Javier, James, Zamir and Ernesto made our stay at Mata fun and comfortable, and the staff were so hospitable. We loved the easy beach access, chairs along the beach, and the bar by the beach. Based on our experience, it was a bit pricier than other hotels on the island, like Sunbreeze. Thanks for making us feel so comfortable!

It’s a nice, clean, simple resort with a small pool to cool off in, plus deck loungers and umbrellas. The beach has lounge chairs and shady grass umbrellas, and there’s a dock for fishing, swimming, or pickup by certain tour operators. The bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu is smaller, but the food was good. Javier and James kept the drinks and conversation going, and put on whatever we asked for on TV. Max, the neighbor dog, likes to stop by for pets and snacks. There are only 17 rooms. We were in #7 right by the pool, and everything was clean, cozy, and cool. The king bed was firm but had a nice fluffy topper. There was a little kitchenette for making breakfast and a bathroom with what you need. There’s no fan or window that opens in the bathroom, so bring air freshener or odor drops for the usual smells. Also, toilet paper isn’t flushed anywhere on the island. We brought small garbage bags to tie things up and contain them. The floor and ceiling were pretty thin, too. The family above us sounded like WrestleMania was going on at times, so I’d suggest a top-floor room or earplugs if that would bother you.
