Sugar Hill Inn

The restaurant was absolutely awesome. We ate there every night, all three nights, and the food was great quality. The beds were good and everything was decent, though the place felt a bit outdated and the rooms were somewhat noisy. The stay at the Inn felt a little too expensive for what you get. I'd read reviews mentioning awkward communication with some personnel, and we experienced that awkwardness at times too. Maybe it was because we were there for Gros Morne hikes and not as exclusive costumers, but that's only my assumption. I can't quite put my finger on it.

The service was friendly, but we wouldn't return. The dining room didn't feel very cozy, and the prices were over the top: 42 CAD for just four scallops, with only a few vegetables on the side, and 8 CAD for a small extra bowl of sushi. We often eat at this kind of restaurant and expect higher prices, but this was far too expensive.

We loved our Friday night meal, with duck and chicken both beautifully prepared. We met Chef Dan, who was a lovely guy, and the whole evening was a great experience. We came back Saturday with a friend. We started with oysters, scallops and mussels, then had cod, lamb and salmon. Again, everything was well prepared and beautifully presented. A real find!

Everything we ordered this time was really delicious, and the restaurant is a must visit if you're in the Gros Morne area. I couldn't quite recreate my earlier experience, though it was still pretty high up there. A few years ago, on my last visit, I had one of my favourite meals of my Newfoundland vacation: an amazing vegetarian dish with all kinds of complex flavours. It was unlike anything I'd eaten before, and I still dream about it.
