We had a comfortable, quiet one-night stay at Auberge Amerik. The room was cozy, free parking was handy, and the location was convenient for amenities and downtown Quebec. Self check-in was easy, with the key and access code provided ahead of time. The towels smelled unpleasant, though, and the air conditioning didn't work, which made the stay less comfortable. Better attention to those details would make the experience much better.
The one positive was how close it is to Old Quebec by car. We booked four nights through Airbnb, but left after the second because we couldn't bear staying longer. The listing called it a room inside a house, but when we arrived we found a hostel. It smelled gross, and there were people living there long term. The listing advertised five rooms, but I counted at least ten. The host kept speaking French even though we were Spanish and spoke to him in English. It continued until we complained, then he suddenly could speak English. I'm not sure where the people who left good reviews are used to sleeping.
Suite K was cozy and warm, with everything needed for a good stay, though it's certainly not a five-star hotel. We really enjoyed our time there, thanks in part to our great host, Richelle (Elle), and I'd stay again. There are two parking spots, plus free street parking on weekends. For check-in, ring the bell at the outside door. We tried the inside doorbell first by mistake. After-hours check-in can be arranged in advance.
Getting into the hotel was a mess. Check-in was apparently only until 10 PM, but I told them I would arrive late and was assured they'd arrange entry. My train was delayed, and when I got there the doors were locked and I couldn't reach anyone. I was left alone outside in an unfamiliar area for over half an hour. The rooms were disappointing too. The fridge and AC were noisy right by the bed, and the curtains let in far too much morning light. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. The service was disappointing, and the rooms were subpar.
The only real drawback was the toilet, which needed several flushes to clear everything away. Nicola was extremely nice and helpful, and suggested several places for us to visit. This beautiful heritage guest house is close to a bus stop, with a bus into Old Quebec every 15 minutes that takes 20 minutes. There's also a very nice cafe next door.
