Westgate Inn & Suites

The morning receptionist was very nice, which is the only reason I'd give this 3 stars. Otherwise I'd rate the motel 1. The carpet was really dirty and smelled horrible, and the blanket and curtain were torn. The AC was noisy and seemed to blow only fan air, not cool air. They also require a $200 deposit, which is ridiculous.

The front desk ladies were awesome, and breakfast was okay. I'm giving the stars to those two women, because the room was not good at all. When we walked in, we wondered if we were really staying there. It felt very old, especially the bedsheet color, even though our bedroom was one that had recently been renewed. We booked the night before because we hadn't known we were coming to Saskatoon, and staying here turned out to be a bad decision. We've had a better stay in a $55 CAD hotel; this one cost $70 CAD.

The heater was the main problem because we couldn't switch it off, and the room got extremely hot. Still, for $86 including tax, we really can't complain much. The room was a good size and looked clean, and the staff were very friendly. I liked that someone walked us to our room and checked it with us again when we left. Breakfast was limited, though we could take as much as we wanted of the few items available. Coffee and tea were always in the foyer. There's no dining area, so you carry your food to your room on a tray. With three little kids and only one chair in the room, eating on the beds was a mess.

The room was too hot to sleep comfortably, and I couldn't get the AC to help. Worse, I was bitten on my feet while in bed, possibly by bed bugs or something. After showering, my feet became very itchy, as if the bathtub had developed or picked up some kind of fungus. The bites were mostly around my toes, and I had to go to a drug store for ointment. The phones didn't work either, so each time I needed the front desk I had to go downstairs. When I described what happened in the morning, the agent refunded me $9.00. After several follow-ups, I haven't heard anything since the end of October. I've stayed at the Westgate Inn on my other visits to Saskatoon, and the rooms and staff had always been great. This last time the front desk agent did try to move me, but the motel is dated and needs a major renovation, even if it's adequate. As a waiter for 15 years, I'd have comped a table's bill for that many problems with the food. My room should have been comped too. The GM and Food and Beverage manager empower me to use my judgment to make things right. If I were at your table and had a meal as bad as this stay, I would have demanded or refused payment. I'll most likely stay somewhere else when I'm back in Saskatoon.
