The balcony view of the Matterhorn was incredible. Waking up to that iconic mountain each morning felt magical, and for that reason I’d recommend Hotel Excelsior in Zermatt, especially if you can get the larger room with a view. We booked about a month before leaving for our first trip to Switzerland, during the holidays when prices were high. Many hotels seemed to require five nights, and we nearly chose somewhere else rather than stay in Tasche and commute, but Hotel Excelsior was available at a relatively more reasonable price and right in town. The location is great, about a six-minute walk from the station. Our room was quite large by European standards, rustic chic, with nothing special about the interior. I liked having the toilet room separate from the shower room, and each had a sink. The shower was very small, though. The beds were two twins pushed together with separate comforters, and I didn’t find them especially comfortable. Free breakfast was a plus with restaurant prices in Switzerland being so high.

Monica, Philip, and the team gave our Ski and travel Club group of 32 exceptional service during our January 2026 trip to Zermatt. They arranged transport for all our luggage on departure, so we didn’t have to drag it to the train. The chef’s dinners were very good, with sufficient portions. It’s an older, somewhat dated property, and room sizes vary; one couple was moved to a larger room by staff at no extra charge. It’s very clean and centrally located, steps from the Funicular, GornerGrat, Ski Bus, and Harry's Ski Bar. The hotel is great value for the price, and I’d stay again. I’d certainly give them a chance, and definitely book a room with a view!

The Matterhorn-view room was nice, but breakfast was nothing special and had very few choices. They didn’t refill the bread. A manager at the front desk was rude, didn’t smile, and didn’t apologize for putting us in the wrong room. The younger staff member was very apologetic.

The hotel is right in the centre of town, and the rooms have great Matterhorn views. Breakfast was included and very good, with plenty to choose from. Well worth a stay.

Our room had a small balcony overlooking the street. The hotel is by the water and close to several restaurants, shops, and a food store. The bar looked nice, and breakfast was very good. A very nice hotel.
