I didn't feel safe there as a woman on my own. I was even groped by some of the people working in the market inside the section where the lifts are. Still, the owner at the time was incredibly kind and helpful. I was there for business, not a holiday, and she kept a letter I needed for my visa to stay longer in mainland China. She explained where I had to go, and came to reception very late at night to meet me and make sure I got the letter and was there safely. That's why it was still an amazing place for me. I'm going back, this time with my partner for a holiday, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I booked a room because I wanted to follow the Wong Kar Wei film, Chungkig express!! There are lots of small hotels inside this mansion, and the elevator is small too. The building has many Napalese residents, who live and work there legally, and I didn't feel it was dangerous. Still, it didn't feel much like HK to me. The room was tiny, about 5-6 sq.m. including the bathroom. I visited in December, and it was too cold. I wouldn't recommend staying here in winter.

I started in premium lounge hostel, and it was alright. The place is made up of b buildings around a small square market, with hotel apartments renting out rooms and bank beds. It's very busy. Downstairs, the market has halal food, smartphones, drinks, and gadgets. It's not a big market, so put your bargaining skills to use.

Chungking Mansions has a legendary reputation, and I'd say it's a must-go for a first-time Hong Kong visitor with a bit of bravery. The building is remarkably diverse, with guesthouses, phone repair shops, and restaurants serving food from around the world, mostly Asia. In some ways, it comes closest to letting you experience the Kowloon Walled City. Go with an open mind and look after yourself, and you'll be fine. Watch "Chungking Express" afterwards to get a sense of the building and of Hong Kong as a city. Enjoy!

It's a very crowded place, mostly occupied by Indians. The lady in charge was accommodating, though, and that helped our family feel at ease despite the crowds. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay in hongkong, this could be the one.
