Gasteiner Hof

I got good value for the money and would recommend it. My single room was upgraded to a suite, which was very spacious and had good heating, especially in the cold. It’s close to the U-Bahn and shops and restaurants. I was lucky to find someone at reception when I arrived, but there’s a phone number on the door if nobody is available.

We chose this hotel for the superior suite with two double beds. The room was fairly clean and large, but the bathroom was tiny, had no window, and had no air filtration. Less than an hour after we arrived, as we were heading out, the owner confronted us very aggressively. He asked my friends if they smoked. They don’t speak German and said yes, and then he came over to me shouting that he was the owner and would throw us out. He got so close that I thought he might hit me. We were shocked and had never experienced anything like it. His wife was kind and apologized the next day, but the owners also live in the hotel building next to our room, and their children were screaming all the time. The owner was Arab, and I don’t want to seem racist, but I thought his manners were zero and someone like that shouldn’t be allowed on Booking or to run a hotel. We’re in Europe, not Afghanistan.

The room in the superior suite on the first floor was big and not bad, but the owner's behavior was strange and very unfriendly. He asked my friends if we'd smoked in the room. They don't speak German and said yes, and he got really angry. We obviously hadn't smoked, and we hadn't even been inside for half an hour when we ran into him in the hallway. His wife was nice and apologized afterwards. The owners also live in the hotel, and their kids screamed constantly, which made it impossible to sleep.

The room's hygiene was the biggest problem. If you bring any food into it, you'll attract a whole army of bugs and cockroaches. It was a nightmare. Older reviews don't mention this, so maybe COVID meant fewer guests were visiting, and I felt the owner had given up maintaining the place. The setup also felt strange to me: it was a reception and a few rooms in a residential building, rather than what I think of as a hotel. A very unpleasant stay.
