We stayed four nights at Ocak Hotel as a family of four, two adults and two kids. The excellent breakfast was one of the best parts, with a big range of sweet and savory food. The hotel sits right by the U-Bahn station Gesundbrunnen, so getting around Berlin is easy, though the area is a bit outside the center. The rooms are modern and new, and housekeeping came each day and did a decent job. But ours smelled noticeably of sewage from the moment we walked in. The window was open, which seemed like it might have been to mask the odor. We were also surprised to see the smoke detector covered with a plastic bag. Check-in is done on iPads, which feels modern. The front-desk staff, though, were extremely unfriendly to other guests. At one point someone even showed a middle finger, which shocked us and made a very poor first impression. On our last evening, a service panel beneath the desk came loose and fell onto my toe, leaving a small injury. My wife asked reception for an ice pack. The receptionist seemed overwhelmed, and although someone was meant to check on me, nobody came. It’s an okay place if you just need somewhere clean to sleep and want a great breakfast, but with the price and the staff’s attitude, it didn’t feel worth the money.

Harun gave me a warm welcome at the front desk. He was friendly and pleasant, and an interesting person to talk with. Since this is my first visit to this beautiful city, I appreciated the essential tips he generously shared for my trip. We also had a lovely moment talking about my home country, Ireland. I’ve been traveling for many days and have been missing home. If people here are as kind and accommodating as Harun, I’m sure I’ll have a wonderful stay.

There’s a nice street view from the room, and it had a cool nespresso machine. The location is great, right beside Gesundbrunnen center. They also have a lovely selection of Rituals soaps.

The room was very clean and the hotel is in a great location. Dinner at the restaurant was nice, though I’d expected the food to be a little better. About three weeks ago during our stay, the fire alarm went off around 1 a.m. and we had to leave the hotel. It turned out to be a false alarm caused by another guest, thankfully, but it was pretty scary.

The room had everything you might need, and the mall and train station are close by, so the location is excellent. Cleanliness was a letdown, though. The sheets weren’t fully clean and felt a bit scratchy, and there were visible stains and fingerprints on the door, in the bathroom, and on the chairs.
