Hotel Hayk

The area around the hotel is great, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, and nightlife. But we arrived after 9 pm after driving from Emden, and our reservation was messed up. Instead of the room overlooking the Rhine that we’d booked and paid for, they gave us a bigger room at street level. We had to listen to partygoers and drunks walking past, which was really annoying. The hotel is good otherwise, but with so many choices nearby, I wouldn’t book again. For that price, make sure you insist on the room you wanted and paid for.

Our suite was a block or so from the hotel, and there was no elevator in the building. We were on the fifth floor and had to haul our luggage a long way up. On Saturday night the pub across the walkway below us played music loudly until 5 am. Sunday was much quieter, so I’d avoid Friday and Saturday nights.

The apartment was clean and modern, but it wasn’t at the address we expected. We wanted to stay by the river, and instead it was up the road on a very busy street with no reception. The kitchen was limited, and there was no couch or sitting area. There was no cleaning service either, so by the third day we had to buy toilet paper and go back to the hotel to ask for the rubbish to be emptied and for more towels. We stayed three nights in July 2017 and probably wouldn’t recommend it for those reasons.

The beds were really comfortable, and there was plenty of space in a perfect spot for a city break. The shower temperature kept changing, though, and the towels felt like sandpaper.
