Hotel Alster-Hof

The room was nice and the location worked well. The beds felt a little hard, and the pillows were completely flat. Breakfast could use more pastry choices. Freshly made coffee would also be a big improvement over the unpleasant drip coffee.

The bar stayed closed the whole time we were there, and there were a few small issues with room servicing. The breakfast wait staff were wonderful, though the food was decent quality with a limited selection. It’s a pet-friendly hotel, and the location is handy for Rathausmrkt and rail connections. We come to Germany in December for the Christmas decorations, since our German friends do them so well. The decorations here were a little disappointing.

The location was great, but the price felt far too high for what we got. The photo showed a renovated room, while ours was very old, with cheap furnishings and an old bed. The cleaner walked in while I was showering and said she’d come back later, but no one came back. By evening, the room still hadn’t been cleaned and we had no fresh towels. Staff were also very grumpy when we checked out.

We found this little place during SMM in Hamburg, the big maritime exhibition and conference week when hotel prices go crazy. The facilities were a bit sketchy, but the price and location made it well worth it. The rooms were clean, the beds were OK, and the bathroom had been upgraded with a good shower. Breakfast was decent. I’ll be back for the next SMM.
