Signature Hotel Astoria Hamburg

The photos give a very different impression of this place. With the price so high because of its central location, I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

After I didn’t arrive by 6 pm, the hotel cancelled my confirmed booking, even though I’d provided my phone number and credit card details. In 30 years of business travel, that’s never happened to me before.

We left without sleeping here and were very glad to find a nicer hotel nearby. The street felt unsafe too, with people on drugs harassing us, and the staff’s lax practices made the whole stay feel even more uncomfortable. The room was noisy enough that you could hear people using the toilets, talking, and being with ladies of the night. Our belongings didn’t feel safe either. You could leave the key at reception and get one by saying a random number, and people could ask for your room number and go in while you were out. We saw three different reception staff and none checked who we were. We’d booked two nights, but the place looked nothing like the photos on booking .com, which seemed to show a different hotel, not Astoria. If that was Astoria, it had fallen into disrepair very quickly. Staff were rude when I checked in my partner and me. The receptionist said he couldn’t stay because of some issues that had happened.

We had a good stay. The room was a decent size, and although I could see smaller rooms on the emergency exit plan by the door, ours was fine. The bed sheets were clean and crisply ironed, the new elevator was good, and breakfast was quite sufficient. Everything was okay, including the hotel and the surroundings.
