I stayed several nights in October 1976, and I still remember it like it was last week. The location was great. I arrived in the evening without realizing the Zoo was next door. Just before I woke up, I was dreaming I was on safari in Africa, then heard elephants trumpeting. It startled me more than it upset me. The beds were obviously comfortable, and the staff were great. They laughed when I told them my waking-up story. I enjoyed the Zoo, the Castle, the University and its infamous pub, along with another pub and some great jazz and blues music. You need a good night’s rest to have a good day, and Heidelberg Youth Host (jugendberge?) provided that. Thank you 😊

The hallways are long, dark, and repetitive, so it feels like a maze and wouldn't work well for large groups. The door keys are unreliable, too. The place is mostly dirty and unhealthy, and the service was poor. Staff seemed grumpy, spoke limited English, and treated strangers more harshly than locals. Calling it a hotel is a stretch.

Some of us couldn't sleep, and several people felt ill after the disgusting food. The room and bathroom were dirty, with insects everywhere, blood across the bed, and spider webs underneath it. The smell hit us as soon as we entered. The service was horrible, the beds were filthy, and I absolutely wouldn't recommend this place. Worst decision ever.

The staff were really dedicated, friendly, and accommodating. It's a good value for the money and could suit families, groups, school trips, or business stays. The rooms are pretty spartan and short on comfort, though, and maintenance has fallen behind a bit, even if they're working on it.

I didn't stay there myself, but my 13-year-old said it was terrible, especially the food. He did say the bread rolls were great. They'd been told towels would be provided, but there weren't any, so all the kids had to dry off with their clothes after showering.
