Das Nikolai Hotel

The room was easy to work in during the day, but there were so few lights that working at night was awkward. That was a small drawback. The bed was good, the room size was fine, and although the room felt a little dated, it didn’t bother me much. The hotel is nicely located, the staff were really helpful, and breakfast was amazing, with even caviar available.

We liked ending the day at the tiny bar, which was a nice spot for a beer or glass of wine. The hotel itself has an old-fashioned feel, though the bathroom and shower are modern. Our big bed looked out over a little park, and the English Garden is a very worthwhile visit just a five-minute walk away. Breakfast had a great choice of bread, cheese, meat, fish, and fruit, plus an attendant who made different coffees and cooked eggs on request. Everyone on staff was friendly and very helpful.

Tucked into a quiet little neighborhood, the property is still close to plenty of shops and restaurants, so the location worked really well. The staff were amazing throughout our stay and made it much more enjoyable. The showers do need attention, though. The holder for the shower head is a long way from where you stand, so getting the water on you means reaching awkwardly or holding the head over yourself.

This was our favorite hotel of the trip through Germany. The area was very peaceful, the rooms were clean, and breakfast was simple but delicious. The staff were so friendly.
