Check Inn B&B - Hostel

Hotel Check Inn came through when we arrived in Cuenca early in the morning and couldn’t get a reply from other hostels advertising 24 hour reception. The staff were very helpful and found us a clean, spacious private room with no frills, exactly what we needed. Great 24h service.

The location was the only good thing for me. The bedrooms were terrible, with old, uncomfortable beds and dirty sheets. The floors squeaked, and the elevator stopped working repeatedly in a single day. The building looks old, and everything seemed worn, as if the owner didn’t want to spend money on anything new and was cutting corners.

We were lucky to get a room with windows facing outside. The bathrooms were clean, but a long way from the rooms, and the included breakfast was poor, just bread, an egg and a small banana. The walls are paper thin and the floor creaks with every step. Our room was near reception, so we heard guests arrive in the middle of the night, with kids running and screaming in the halls.

I booked a single room with a shared bathroom, and it worked out fine for the price. The hotel is in the heart of the historic district, close to cathedrals, parks and art, so I enjoyed being near the city’s pulse. I felt very safe; the staff are friendly and there’s video monitoring, though it didn’t seem necessary. People on the street are friendly, and the city is safe and accommodating to expats and tourists, though I stay watchful and practical. It’s a beautiful country, with the mountains right at your doorstep.
