Otavalo can feel dense and crowded, especially on market days, so this location worked well for us. It’s far enough from the crowds, noise, and pollution, but still close enough to get into town easily for shopping and meals. The lodge has a peaceful, lush setting and spectacular views. The owner designed and built it, and you can tell it’s a labor of love. We enjoyed the winding hallways, hidden courtyards, different staircases, and all the colors. No two rooms are alike. Our children spent their time running around the property, and the staff were kind enough to put up with them. They also got attached to the resident dog, who seemed to enjoy playing with them. The owner is a joy to talk with, clearly passionate about art and music, and he’s a musician himself. His collections are extensive. It would be an ideal place for an artist or writer. Peguche waterfalls are only a few minutes away, and entry is $1 per adult. There’s also a small market with lots of clothing vendors just outside the waterfall entrance, handy if you don’t want to go into town. We didn’t have a car. The owner drove us to and from the airport, and we used taxis around town. Fares are affordable, $2.50 in town and $6 out of town. The road up to the lodge is steep and paved with cobblestones. I was told it would be rebuilt in either 2023 or 2024. There’s a longer alternative route that goes down the hill instead of up, though taxis have no trouble making the climb. I’ve driven extensively in Central America, and the roads here seem at least as good or better. Still, if you’re not comfortable driving here, consider other options.
