Pension San Ignacio Centro

The location was fantastic, and the room itself was adequate. But it was extremely hot in summer without A/C, though there was a fan. The bathroom smelled awful, like mildew and sewage. When we complained, we were told it was because of the river, even though the rest of the city didn’t smell that way. That stench is unfortunately going to stay in my memory.

For a two-star hotel, this is one of the better-value options in a city where accommodation is pretty expensive. The welcome was friendly, and our double room was a decent size with a comfortable bed. You’re about a 10-minute walk from either main rail station, the main tourist area, the characterful old town with its many pintxos bars, and the harbour. From there you can continue up to the castle and statue. There are compromises. The decor, including the bathroom, is tired and needs maintenance. The storage looks cheap, the towels are thin, and the TV is tiny. The cathedral is only metres away, and its bells start around 7am. Fine for a couple of nights if you can do without luxury and accept what you’re paying for.

I cancelled two months ago, well within the free cancellation period, and I’m still waiting for my refund. The hotel stopped replying when I contacted them, so I had to get the money back through my credit company. It seems clear they had no intention of refunding me.

The place was super clean and in a great location. I especially liked the water-filtering shower, the really comfortable bed with lovely blankets, and the little balcony where I could look out at the streets and enjoy the atmosphere.
