The building has a lot of echo, so I could clearly hear the neighbors and the ground-floor door slamming even from the second floor. The stairwell and hallway outside the doors also need more light. If you come back at night, bring a flashlight or make sure your phone has enough battery, or finding the lock and using your key can be difficult. The hotel itself was nice. I had booked a balcony room but never saw one, though it wasn’t a big deal.
The street outside the apartments gets pretty noisy until late. There’s no air conditioning, but the evenings were cool, so that was fine. The owner was kind and helpful.
Fernando makes things easy and can suggest places to visit or eat if you want. The renovated apartments are modern and very clean. They’re in a lively, central spot close to Plaza Cañadio, the promenade, and the Botín Centre. A great choice for a few days in Santander.
At 2:00 PM, a man named Fernando and his wife met me and said the cleaning lady was still working on the apartment. I had a lot of suitcases and bags with me, as well as my one-year-old’s stroller. We’d booked only a few hours earlier and had already paid. They asked for my ID and took a photo of it. When I asked when I could check in, since I wanted to rest and enjoy the quiet I’d booked, they wouldn’t give me a time and said they’d let me know. They stored my luggage, so I left to pass the time and collect the keys later. Just five minutes after I left, Fernando called to say my reservation was canceled. I was shocked and asked why. He said he’d noticed strange things, which made no sense to me, since I’d simply booked and paid for a few days. I went back to the building hoping for a clear explanation, but Fernando had no real reason. He said he’d had bad experiences with other people and that something seemed strange to him, without saying what. I was very upset. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before. I’ve always had pleasant stays in the apartments I’ve used, and never met people who canceled a reservation for no clear reason. Maybe they lack dignity, seriousness, and empathy, especially since I was traveling with luggage and my baby. I don’t know what they think, but they seemed racist and mean-spirited. They wasted my time and energy. Their behavior was truly shameful, and I’m very upset about it. The area around the building was rather dirty too, and, as shown in the picture, there was graffiti on the door.
It’s a lovely apartment in an older building, fully renovated and tastefully decorated. It has everything needed for a few days in Santander. The only things I missed were blinds to keep out the heat and light, and air conditioning.
