Elgel Hotel and Spa

I’d had good experiences here before, with attentive staff and good food. Yesterday, though, service in the garden restaurant was poor. I had to wait for a waiter to pass by whenever I needed anything, and even went to the cashier myself to pay. The food was no better than what you’d get from a small food stand. The fries were the worst part, they tasted like they’d been cooked in oil that had been used far too many times. Not the four star hotel experience I expected.

The indoor pool is warm, clean, and a decent size. On our first visit, though, my wife felt very uncomfortable because men in the upstairs gym kept staring down through the window at the pool. The pool staff also seemed bored, which made things feel awkward. I later gave the place another try at the spa. The staff were friendly, but the facilities badly need work. The sauna wasn’t working, the steam room only had one setting, hot, and the shower was filthy. It opens onto a toilet, so I could hear someone using it while I was trying to shower. Disgusting. I’d change my feedback if Elgel convinces me these problems have been fixed.

The massage felt rushed and uneven, and when I politely brought that up, nobody tried to adjust it. The staff seemed hurried and inattentive throughout. My appointment had already started late, without a clear explanation or apology. The room didn’t seem clean or ready, and the atmosphere was unpleasant: harsh lighting, a strong chemical smell, and no calming music. At checkout, I was charged for services I hadn’t received. It took some back and forth to sort out. I left feeling more stressed than when I arrived. I don’t usually post negative reviews, but I hope the spa improves. I won’t be back or recommend it based on this visit.

We really didn’t want to leave after such a lovely stay. Everyone was so friendly and kind, and special thanks to Anteneh, amebet, Tinsae, and Abel for looking after us so well. They made our time in Ethiopia/Addis amazing. Thank you, Elgel Hotel!
