Le Fenelon

I had a really enjoyable stay for a painting workshop during a very hot week. There was no air conditioning, but fans and a nice pool helped. The food was delicious, with good-sized portions and lovely presentation. A real find. The very friendly young couple bought the hotel three years ago, and I hope they do well.

The village is stunning, and this is just the sort of cozy, classic hotel and restaurant I'd hope to find while traveling through France. The rooms are comfortable, there's a pool for cooling off in the afternoon, and the lovely team welcomes you with a smile even after a long, busy day. They don't make a fuss about the restaurant, but the simple, classic menu is cooked beautifully, with little touches that make it special and never pretentious. I ate there all three nights. At first I was just too tired to look elsewhere, but one bite was enough to know I didn't want to. The familiar French dishes, Confit du Canard, Chicken Roulade and salade de chèvre, all came with subtle twists. The goat's cheese salad sat on kadayif pastry, bringing Syrian and classic French cooking to mind. My first starter was basically a caprese salad, Italian more than French, but the mandolin-sliced tomatoes and burrata made it one of the best I've tasted, even though I make caprese at home all the time. The Confit du Canard may be the nicest I've had, and the desserts were lovely. Even on Monday, when restaurants often use up leftovers, the chef was creative and every bite was a pleasure. The menu is very reasonably priced, and I'd remember this place and forget the fine dining I tried elsewhere in the region. My only gripe is that the mattress was a little hard for me. I often have trouble sleeping, so I'm fussy about beds and used to a very soft one. Most people would probably be fine. I loved this place: wonderful hotel, staff and food in a beautiful setting. Staying here for a while is hard to beat.

I stopped here for a night on my way south and really wish I'd stayed longer. The owners and staff made us feel welcome, and everything was lovely, from the room and atmosphere to the food. I'll definitely come back for a longer visit.

What a charming hotel. The staff were wonderfully friendly, the rooms clean and peaceful, and the food delicious. Breakfast had perfect croissants. We loved the warm feel of the place, from supper on the terrace to breakfast in the pretty dining room.
