The island is beautiful, but I wouldn't stay at Port Askaig Hotel again. My stay was so bad I cut it short. The hotel felt neglected, unclean and unwelcoming throughout. There were cobwebs everywhere, mould on the walls, hairs on the bed, and dog mess in the hallway. The heating in my room didn't work at all. I also found the attitude of the woman who seemed to be running things extremely unpleasant. The place wasn't presented as pet-friendly, yet two small, smelly dogs were roaming around, which added to the general feeling of uncleanliness.

We stopped for dinner before taking the ferry back to the mainland, and the chips were the best I've had in the UK. The owners, who also run the place, were the sweetest, dearest people. It's not luxury, but they treat you like family, and the place is as quaint and cheerful as can be.

This is a charming little place with a lovely atmosphere, relaxed and helpful staff, and good food. The chips were the best I've had in a while. It's an old building, and the rooms could use a few updates, like coat hooks and replacement blinds where they're old or damaged. Still, they're perfectly liveable, and those are hardly major problems for a place like this. It's a 10-room hotel or inn in a building that's hundreds of years old in a remote Scottish town. If you expect a cheap chain hotel, you might be disappointed. But if you know what you're getting and don't mind an old building, I highly recommend it.

Hubby booked it last minute and I cried. This place has so much potential, but right now it feels totally run down and neglected. They call it character, but the dirt starts at the front door and it's disgusting. There were cobwebs, dirty windows you couldn't see through, dead insects, and no pillow protectors. The corridor carpet wasn't joined properly and was a trip hazard, and the paintwork was unbelievable. The kettle's PAT test was out of date, and the room coffee had expired in April 2024. They charge over £200 a night, so please save your money.

The rooms are spacious and have everything you need, and breakfast in the morning was delicious. It's especially handy if you have an early ferry from Port Askaig. One evening we had a quick dram in the hotel bar with the owner couple. They were lovely and shared some of the hotel's rich history. Apparently it's one of the oldest bars on the island, so ask Marion about it over a good dram of Islay Whisky.
