The Marmalade Hotel

The staff were friendly and helpful, and I would definitely stay here again on a visit to the Isle of Skye. It's a comfortable, well-appointed hotel within easy reach of Portree town centre. Breakfast and dinner both offered excellent, nicely presented food sourced locally. There are pleasant facilities too, including a relaxation room and a sauna, though the sauna was closed at the time.

After all the hiking around Skye, this was a lovely place to get some proper rest. I loved the rooms, especially the tasteful decor and well-furnished bathroom. The sheets were an absolute delight to sleep on.

The Marmalade sits on a quiet hill, just a short walk from town, and it's a great base for the highlands. Storr, the Quiraing and other outdoor activities are all within 45 minutes. Rooms can be on the expensive side, but they're fairly spacious, and there's a full bar, restaurant and sauna on the grounds.

This didn't feel like a four-star hotel at all. There was no bell service, no turndown service, and marks on the walls and furniture. When we arrived to check in, reception was on the phone and didn't acknowledge us for five minutes, until the call ended. Like the restaurant, the hotel was overpriced. The host said, "Follow me Guys" while taking my elderly Mother, My Wife, and me to a formica top table with paper napkins. After asking what kind of water we wanted, they just placed the bottle on the table. The lounge floor was filthy, and there's more I could list. After staying at the Isle of Eriska and The Balmoral in Edinburgh, this place felt like a Youth Hostel.
