The peaceful setting is full of flowers, from campanula, bluebells and wisteria to primrose and what I think were native little daffodils. Eddie and Saffie, the resident cats, and Ollie the yellow lab make up a lovely welcome. We love The Stables of Kirkland's Cottege. It's immaculate and has that real charm and authenticity that hasn't disappointed us on our third trip to Scotland in 30 years, and our first in 25. Douglas was still waiting for us when we finally arrived in the dark, bless him. Customs had delayed us by 10 minutes, thinking we looked like nefarious characters and deciding to question us, so we missed our afternoon flight from Heathrow to Edinburgh. By the time we landed, picked up the rental car and drove to the cottage, it was very late. If you know Scotland in May, you'll know what that means. The kitchen has a mini-fridge, clean crockery, microwave, double oven, stovetop, washing machine and a round table with four chairs. There are two well-lit bathrooms, one upstairs with the two bedrooms and one downstairs by the kitchen and sitting rooms. I've never been so excited to see a tub. I was ready to soak in all the hot water I could get!

Douglas made our first days in Scotland so memorable, and Kirklands felt like home because of both the house and the hosts. The house has Victorian decor and a giant Victorian bathroom, and the huge property, built in 1730, comes with beautiful gardens. Breakfast was amazing and tailored to dietary requirements. The location is great, too. Douglas is a fabulous host, always happy to share his wealth of local knowledge. And the two dogs and two cats were a bonus. I'll always remember olli and barty!

We found it quiet despite being only a couple of minutes' drive from the main road, with lovely countryside around it and river walks nearby. It's an easy drive to Edinburgh, though about an hour away, and Glentress, the mountain biking mecca, isn't too far either. The owner was happy to let us keep our bikes in the old coach house. This pretty courtyard cottage made a great holiday base. It's tastefully furnished, has a homely wood burner and rooms big enough for five adults. The dining table only seats three, though the owner has plans to extend the kitchen, so that may change. The owner was very welcoming and accommodating.

We were given a lovely breakfast and had a very comfortable room. The location and facilities are beautiful, but Douglas' hospitality stood out most of all.
