The Highwayman Inn

I only stopped in for lunch, so I can’t say anything about the rooms. A nice lady served me, and the location was perfect: I was driving along, thought “I’m hungry,” looked out the window, and there it was. Spooky! I could see there was an upstairs, so I think it had rooms. Five stars for that.

It’s sad to see how far this place has gone downhill. It used to be known for excellent food, but sadly most of the dishes I’ve tried recently have been pure salt. It’d be good to see someone put some care into the place and bring it back to its former glory.

We left within half an hour of arriving because the place was awful. The toilet was coming away from the floor, the bathroom smelled of urine and had damp on the ceiling and walls. The beds made an awful noise every time you moved.

The room felt tired, though the bed linen and towels were clean. It wouldn’t take much to freshen it up, maybe £20 in materials and an hour’s work. The bathroom was tatty, the shower mouldy and the taps needed descaling. We ate in the pub. The staff were friendly, the food was OK and reasonably priced, with no surcharge despite what another post reported. The sports TV and in-house music competed with each other. We arrived late Tuesday afternoon, and the language in the bar was colorful. Of course that’s not the pub’s fault, but worth bearing in mind if you’re bringing children.
