The Lion Hotel

The meals were good and plentiful, and the price was very reasonable, though the dessert portions were small. We weren’t rushed, and I’d consider meeting here again. We’d picked The Lion as a convenient spot for Sunday lunch with friends, none of us having eaten there before. It’s an old hotel with lots of character, and the main dining room is large, with panelled walls and plenty of tables. The young waiting staff gave us a warm welcome. Some renovation is urgently needed, though: several old window panes were cracked, and the outside looked scruffy.

A pub should feel this welcoming. They were mega friendly to dogs and their owners, and treated our five-year-old grandchild just right too. The refurbished rooms are excellent, and the food is good, honest pub fare. We’ll be back.

I stayed here last week, came back this week, and have already booked again for next week. That says plenty. The rooms are clean, comfortable and well kept, and the hotel has a lovely traditional atmosphere with a great bar area and comfortable seating. The staff are fantastic, always friendly and helpful. Everything’s spot on. Highly recommended.

The restaurant was good. I had the duck and really enjoyed it, and the service was very friendly. There was no breakfast available in the morning, which was disappointing. The location is handy, close to the main road but not too close. I stayed here and asked in the restaurant. The room was a very good size, but several things let it down: the single-glazed windows, which might be listed that way, didn’t shut properly and let in cold air and traffic noise. There was an old fan on the wardrobe floor, and the TV cables weren’t tidied, so a child could pull them. The kettle lead didn’t reach far enough, so it had to go on the floor to boil. The carpet needed cleaning, and there were cobwebs. The bed was comfortable enough for me.
