The mixed grill was £29, and it was awful. I was told there were no pork chops, so I agreed to extra sausage, but the plate came with four overcooked cheap sausages, dry black pudding and burnt gammon. The lamb chop turned up ten minutes later and was just as bad. They took the price off the bill after I complained. Most of the other food was only average, nowhere near worth it. Before that, our table was in the path of freezing air conditioning. When we asked about it, staff said they couldn't control the heating and told us to move wherever we liked. The tea smelled and tasted of some kind of cleaning product, and they had no white sugar, just brown. The service was rude, and the food was cheap and poorly cooked. It was far below what you'd expect from Wetherspoons, at five times the price. Never again.

The food was quite exceptional, so I do want to come back. But our Valentine’s meal was meant to be a special first for my partner, who had never been out for one as an adult, and it wasn't the quiet, romantic evening I expected. We’d booked away from the dogs, which was fine, but unruly children were shouting, screaming and running around when we arrived. There was no table service at first, just ordering at the bar like McDonald’s. At £35 per person before drinks, I expected more, and did get table service after asking. I was also surprised that waiters could serve wearing only black tights, leaving little to the imagination. I’m no prude, but there’s a limit. Compliments to the chef.

The gravy was so good that we heard other tables praising it too, and the Sunday carvery at the newly reopened Tayleur’s Arms was great value. The meats were delicious, with loads of nicely cooked vegetables. We especially liked the crackling and the bacon bits to add to the sprouts. It’s a lovely country pub, and I bet it’s fab on a summer day. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed it so much that we’re going back next weekend.

We just turned up without a booking for Sunday lunch and had a fabulous carvery. You can choose three meats or a bit of each, and pick a small, medium or large serving, a great idea without an age rule like having to be under five. Even the medium was more than we could finish. The Yorkshire pudding was a little flat, but otherwise it was a great find.

We had a lovely belated birthday meal for my brother. My carvery with gammon, veg and mash was great, and the berry crumble and custard was delicious too. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, and the service made the visit feel special. We’ll definitely think about coming again. If you haven’t been, I’d recommend giving it a try.
