We stopped in for lunch during a day out and got a really friendly welcome. Four small plates, cheesy chips and two lattes came to £40, with generous portions and good prices. The salt and pepper squid mostly tasted of garlic sauce rather than S&P, though I still enjoyed it. I'd happily recommend the place.

The included full English breakfast was delicious, homemade, nicely cooked and very generous, and everyone serving it was so welcoming that we almost felt like part of the team. We also slept well: the room was warm, cosy and comfortable. Staff were lovely throughout, from the efficient, helpful check-in to the friendly bar service, and checking out was easy too. We got a free space in the small on-site car park; there’s a paid car park just across the road as well. I’d nearly been put off by some bad reviews before our stay, but our experience was fantastic and I really recommend the place.

We booked dinner for three on 16 December, but only two of the three drinks arrived, and just one of our three food choices was available. As we tried to pick two other dishes, our server walked away without saying anything to us or the other staff, presumably because his shift was ending. After waiting 15 minutes, we left without paying for the drinks. We went across the square to the ROSE AND CROWN instead and had a great meal with excellent service.

After packing up my market stall for the day, I went in for an early dinner. The turkey and ham hock pie was lovely, packed with filling and seeming homemade, and the extra gravy was delicious. The young waiting staff were really friendly. I’ll definitely come back.
