We had dinner and a few drinks here last night. The pub has a great atmosphere, and the food still came in a takeaway box even though we ate in. I hadn’t realised the Friday Night Takeaway prices only applied to takeaway orders, so another £5 per dish was added for dining in. That should probably be made clear on the menu. I’d have given it five stars without that surprise.

There’s a proper skittle alley here, which you don’t find in many Somerset pubs now. The Mildmay feels like a real local again, with a lively buzz and good conversations around the place. It had been a long time since my last visit, after the previous landlord had run it down, but Penny is bringing it back to life. There’s something special happening here, and it’s well worth visiting.

The meal was very good and reasonably priced, and the landlord gave us useful ideas for places to visit. We also liked the location in the quaint village of Queen Camel, and the staff were welcoming and helped carry our bags in. Our room was small but clean and comfortable, though the mattresses sagged a bit and the sockets were awkwardly tucked behind the bed headboards. The trouble was the noise. Loud music went on until after 1am, and after a long journey we just wanted to sleep. It started out at a reasonable level, then was suddenly turned up. Breakfast was included and adequate, if nothing special, but on our second morning it was even more sparse. We’d hoped to have dinner there that evening, but were told food service had stopped at 5pm. Since it’s a remote village, it would have helped to know that at breakfast. We were lucky to have snacks in our room. When we were ready to leave, we couldn’t find the owners and had to ask the cleaner where to leave the key. We loved the setting, but left disappointed and don’t plan to return.

The room was very nice, but I couldn’t get hot water from the bathroom tap, so I washed my hands in the shower. I’d hoped for a cooked breakfast, but there wasn’t a chef available. The pub was just okay.

A late thank you for the wonderful service during our New Year stay in Yeovil. We went to the pub several times, enjoyed delicious food, and the staff were brilliant. We also spent New Year’s Eve there, and the atmosphere was great. The owner even gave us all a lift home afterwards.
