Hotel Sphinx

The Sphinxis is a great base, with excellent restaurants nearby and ferry services or boat cruises about a five-minute walk away. There’s also a great Italian restaurant just outside. Our room was very clean, and we had a fantastic time. I’d come back to this hotel.

The Sphinx Hotel is a stylish, well-kept place in Chora, Naxos, and feels much more comfortable than its official two-star rating suggests. It reopened in June 2025 after a complete rebuild and has 33 modern rooms across three floors, cared for by a friendly, attentive team. Rooms are compact but nicely arranged, with king or twin bed options, quality linen, a choice of pillows, and double-glazed soundproof balcony doors. Some have generous balconies, with the largest in Room 204. There’s air conditioning, a pod coffee machine, a safe, and you can get a kettle from reception. Rooms are serviced every two days with full linen replacement, which seems more than acceptable for a two-star hotel. Breakfast is included, from continental options through to a full hot selection that compares with a four-star property. There’s even a lift, unusual for a hotel this size. Aperto, the hotel’s popular Italian restaurant and bar, has a lively feel and draws both guests and locals, so it’s best to reserve. The location is excellent too: about three minutes on foot to Agios Georgios beach, arguably Naxos’s best, and five minutes to the harbour, restaurants, boutiques, and the charming old town, built on ruins dating back to 4000 BC. Sphinx Hotel is a comfortable, modern base with a lot of style and excellent upkeep.

Recently renovated, with a nice restaurant attached, this is a pleasant hotel and I’d stay again. The spacious rooms are clean, reception is friendly and open 24 hours, and the high-tech keys are a nice touch. The air conditioning works extremely well, almost too well, and there’s also a fan. I prefer having the bathroom as its own room rather than an open-plan setup. The hotel is near the center and within walking distance of the beach. Breakfast runs until 11 and has a small but nice selection. The open shower walls mean water seems to get all over the bathroom floor whenever you shower. Also, this is just my preference, but I like a heavier comforter, and the default bedding is only a sheet.

Breakfast was the biggest letdown: the fruit was old and the bread was rotten. Luckily, there are good breakfast restaurants nearby. The hotel has recently been renovated, but it still looks unfinished, with wires hanging in some spots and tape around painted areas. The rooms have a nice layout, but the hot bath wasn’t warm at all, more like a cold plunge when the weather is cooler. Cleanliness could have been better too: cleaning gloves had been left in the room, and there was hair in the shower from previous guests.
