Status International Hotel

I arrived at 4:30 in the morning and asked to change rooms, but was told the hotel was full, so I had no other option. This ground-floor room is behind the laundry and beside reception. I could hear calls and people walking past, as well as laundry noise. Bright light came through the poor curtains, making the room feel like daytime. There wasn't any drinking water in the room either. The shower is faulty and unusable. The technician can't come until Monday, which means two days without a shower. The Wi-Fi also keeps cutting in and out. Avoid booking a ground-level room.

The worst part was how I was treated. At a quarter to noon, the receptionist called rudely and said I had to leave right away or pay for another night. At 12:05 she called again, saying I had two minutes to leave or pay extra. She knew my driver was waiting downstairs, and the hotel had very few guests. It felt like pressure meant to humiliate me, perhaps because I'm a foreigner. I hope I never have to repeat this experience. The room was awful too: moldy smelling, run-down, with old, poorly maintained furniture and terrible “decoration.” The shower needed repairs, though it was usable. Please stay away from this terrible place.

The restaurant next door was very good, and they stayed open past closing time for the five of us. As for the hotel, it's a dump. The upstairs gym kept me from sleeping, and the night manager was rude. A tall Black guy told me the gym had been there since the hotel was built and that I should have known if I'd checked online. He kept telling me to calm down, though nobody was raising their voices. The front desk had a note saying I'd requested a single room, but they canceled my room and left me stuck in the noisy one. When I asked for fresh towels, she paged housekeeping and said, “if you have clean towels, give him 2.” Sir, you're right that I should have checked online. I would have found out this place is a flipping dump. Owner, watch out for fake reviews. There's a sign saying to call you, and I will.

I spent five days at Status International Hotel while backpacking in Guyana, and it felt clean, comfortable, and safe. The Wi-Fi was fast, and I could exchange currency for Guyanese dollars at the front desk. There's a decent restaurant next door, so you don't need to wander around Georgetown after dark. The gym on the third floor gets pretty noisy during the day. I was out most of the time, though, so it wasn't much of an issue.
