A used sanitary pad was left curled up beside an exposed, yellowed toilet brush. The room felt barely fit for anyone to stay in.

The location has a lot going for it: the metro is nearby, there's a bus stop across the road for getting to the airport, and you can reach a pier for a cheap ferry to Hong Kong. There's also a beautiful, large park close by. The room itself is barely big enough for a bed and a tiny fridge, and the bathroom is so cramped that standing in the tub seems like the best way to shower. The sheets were dirty. Downstairs, the little local stalls sold awful food at prices that weren't cheap. I found cheap portions at a clean, modern fast food place on the second floor of the neighboring Western shopping area. There was just one elevator serving the hostel, and the queue was always long. If the cheapest possible place is what you're after, European hostel could work.

Check-in was quick, the room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. Excellent value for the money, with a great location too.
