My two-night stay at Indigo Hong Kong was about a 3.8/5 experience. The room was beautiful and the location excellent, though the rest of the stay was no-frills and fuss-free. As an IHG Diamond Ambassador member, I found the check-in perfunctory, just a quick get-it-done process. That felt different from Indigo properties in Japan and Alishan, and more like our experience in Europe. The official check-in time is 3 PM and checkout is 11 AM. We were heading to the WM Hotel after checkout, so I didn’t ask for or use a later checkout as a Diamond member. The hotel is right in Wan Chai, with easy access to sights and food in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. The bus to The Peak stops right outside. My corner room had fine views and a distinctive design, and the Shanghai Tang toiletries were excellent. Management limits drinking water to two bottles a day, which felt like another cost-cutting or greenwashing measure. They could consider filtered tap water like the WM hotel, or guests can buy water at nearby stores. Breakfast was the worst part. With Indigo branding, I expected more than a poor buffet that reminded us of a Holiday Inn Express: generic supermarket bread and only sliced watermelon for fruit. The air conditioning was on full blast, making breakfast unpleasant. The breakfast staff were kind and friendly, but the limited offerings felt like cost cutting.

The cleaning staff were fantastic and very attentive when freshening up my room each morning. The cigarette smell, though, lingered in my room on the third morning and was also noticeable in the sky bar. As a non-smoker, it wasn’t a nice thing to wake up to or smell while having a drink. I arrived around 1:30 PM for a scheduled 2 PM check-in, but was told my room might not be ready until 3 PM. They offered to store my luggage and have me wait in the lobby, which wasn’t comfortable for a 90-minute wait after a long day of travel. No alternatives were offered at first, even though IHG platinum members are advised they can get early check-in and upgrades when available. The pool and sky bar were both closed when I asked if I could wait there instead. I then asked whether any other rooms were available, since check-in was at 2 PM rather than 3 PM, and was finally offered one that was ready immediately. What shocked me was that without asking, I would have waited an hour past check-in even though rooms were cleaned and ready, and I’m an IHG platinum elite member. That wasn’t the service I expected for a four-star upscale hotel.

I stayed for five days and had a great experience. The room was spacious, clean, and well equipped, with good lighting, automatic curtains, and a large bathroom. The hotel is close to the metro, attractions, restaurants, and cute cafés. There’s also a coffee shop and small market right next door, which was handy. You can look for good deals on the hotel’s official website.

The room was modern and in great condition, the staff were efficient, and the soundproofing worked well even in this busy area. There are good restaurants and cafes a short walk away, and the MTR and several bus routes are close. I ordered room service dinner one night, which was tasty and reasonably priced. The main issue was the air conditioning, set to 18 degrees with no way for guests to adjust it. The room got very cold at night. When I mentioned it at reception, they arranged a heater that worked well. It’s unusual for guests to have no temperature control in a modern four-star hotel, though.

The team were consistently friendly and accommodating, and nothing seemed like too much trouble. Their care made the stay relaxed and left me feeling well looked after. The location in Wan Chai was also excellent, with easy access to the MTR, shops, and restaurants, convenient for both business and leisure. The whole team’s attention and care reflected strong leadership and made a positive difference throughout my wonderful stay at Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island. I’d happily recommend it as a stylish and welcoming base.
