Black Dog Hostel

The place itself felt awful, dark and creepy, with none of the usual hostel atmosphere. More seriously, the owner suddenly kicked out the volunteers without giving a reason, wouldn’t even let them stay one night, threatened to call the police and demanded they leave that day. This was the worst hostel I’ve volunteered at. Volunteers, avoid it. When she needs volunteers, though, she asks you to help her find people.

!!! BED BUGS ALERT!!! Disgusting place. The kitchen and fridge were awful, and the toilets and shower were covered in mold. We didn’t spot the bed bugs during our first check, but we got them. Edit: We have a bed bug infestation at home now. If anyone knows how to contact health inspection in Hungary, please reach out to me.

I found bed bugs in the toilet laundry basket within five minutes of arriving. Based on lots of reviews on Booking, it seems this issue has been going on for months or years without being resolved. This was the worst hostel experience I’ve had as an experienced traveler, and I’m writing to warn others. I cancelled my stay, which was for two people for two nights. The volunteer working there assured me I’d get all my money back, but I only got half. Now I have to deal with Booking to resolve it because the place hasn’t helped. After finding the bugs, we had to find another hostel right away. AVOID.

The location was nice, but the staff were disappointing. They were intoxicated and argued late at night. I hope something changes in the future.
