Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest

The rooftop bar drinks were the one drawback. My cocktail cost $26 USD, more than I pay at rooftop bars in Manhattan, and that felt out of step with Budapest food and drink prices. Otherwise, what a stay. My room was gorgeous, especially the bathroom, and housekeeping kept it immaculate. The lobby was beautiful too. Everyone was kind, friendly, attentive, and helpful. I’d definitely recommend staying here and enjoying it.

We spent four nights at Matild Palace for our wedding anniversary, and the staff helped make it memorable. Gyorgy at reception had a delightful manner, while Nicolette was understanding and accommodating. Oliver at the Duchess brought great energy and was a real master of his craft, just right for a bar like that. Samdar was courteous, caring, and professional, and never seemed to think any task was too big or small. They’re a real credit to Matild Palace, and I hope management appreciates how well they represent the brand. The whole hotel was beautifully maintained, richly appointed, and decorated to an exceptional standard, with intricate details throughout. The design and architecture deserve the highest praise for the scale and care in every part of this magnificent, opulent place. For a five-star luxury stay in Budapest, Matild Palace is hard to beat. The Four Seasons may be better placed, but its rooms felt dated and tired by comparison.

I didn’t stay at Matild Palace. This is only about seeing its architecture and striking nighttime appearance while wandering the inner city on our first evening in Budapest. The palace dates to 1902. Archduchess Maria Klotild commissioned it, and Kálmán Giergl and Flóris Korb designed it as one of a pair of grand palaces meant to form a ceremonial entrance to the city near the Elisabeth Bridge area. Its late Belle Époque style, neo-baroque touches, fine workmanship, and intricate decoration are still easy to admire. After sunset, the lights bring out the grand façade and elegant details beautifully. The lively, romantic atmosphere around it made for a lovely place to take photos and videos. What stood out to me was how the historic grandeur sits alongside modern Budapest’s energy. Even just seeing it from outside, especially at night, is memorable and well worth it for anyone interested in architecture or photography. A lovely evening landmark in the inner city.

The breakfast at Spago was the best I’ve had in more than 1,000 Marriott nights, with unusual and house-made options that made it memorable. Nikoletta in Guest Services was wonderful and made sure we had what we needed. Thanks again for the upgrade, Nikoletta. All the staff were so nice. We loved our four-night stay at Matild Palace. The hotel is gorgeous, with lots of thoughtful touches. As a lifetime Titanium member, I’d like to return on another Budapest trip.
