Our bungalow, number 2, had a huge comfortable bed, and the old rooms were spacious. They aren’t brand new, but the price for what you get is good. The aircon was quiet, and the bathroom had plenty of space for toiletries, a shaving plug, and a dressing table. Rai welcomed us very kindly. The garden was lovely and peaceful, with only nature sounds, yet Ubud center, the art district, the water temple, and Ubud palace were very close.

The pool wasn’t in use when we stayed, and it’s no longer advertised. The rest of the place was lovely: our room was clean, with a private balcony and a lush garden view, and the garden itself was beautiful and quiet. Staff were so lovely. You can reach the monkey forest on foot in about 20 minutes, and there’s a palace and museum at the end of the street. The main shopping and restaurant streets are just 30m from the doorstep in one direction, while a five-minute walk the other way brings you to peaceful rice fields. Siti Bungalow also has a really amazing gallery of art by Hansen Snel, which they’ll unlock for you on request. It was the first hotel in the area.

The swimming pool wasn’t in use, presumably for ecological reasons, but there are plenty of nearby pools. The staff were friendly and helpful, and it was great fun spending time with Siti, the owner, who’s led an amazing life. The accommodation feels old-school and luxurious, at a backpacker price.

The rooms are a bit outdated, but I love this Ubud upper-backpacker style: fan only, a great garden, and a lovely river view. I came to see the Han Snel gallery because I like his work a lot and also looked at the rooms. The gallery opens only on request. The restaurant is closed now.
