The family who own and run Tagel House are very nice, but the cabin we stayed in for two weeks wasn't great. Gaps in the walls let big spiders inside, and there weren't shared spaces. The kitchen had so little to offer that we hardly used it. There are two dogs that barked at me all the time and could feel intimidating. The location is on a busy street where walking is difficult, and it's a 15 minute walk from the centre. The toilet window meant you could see your partner using it. We asked for another pillow and they didn't have one, so the place didn't seem very well equipped. It might be okay for a night or two, but I wouldn't stay longer.

I stayed for two months and felt safe and looked after as a solo female traveler. The family are lovely. They gave me space when I wanted it, but were always up for a good chat in the garden and kept an eye out for me. Their dogs are treated like family, which matters to me. Little Loli, a tiny Pomeranian-sized dog, is the boss. Save her some table scraps and she'll be your fur-ever friend! Even though the guesthouse is off a VERY busy street, the rooms are set back from it, so my large downstairs room and the garden were quiet. There were flowing koi-ponds just outside, and I never heard traffic with the windows open or noise from the tenants in the two rooms above me. I'm super noise sensitive. A friend in one of those upstairs rooms had street noise, though, since her room faced the road. Most rooms are downstairs, and I'd recommend one of those. The place is about a 3 minute walk from a large supermarket and maybe a 5 minute walk from Ubud's main "downtown" area. There's a local restaurant directly across the street with very budget-friendly prices. You can rent a scooter to explore or get transportation to and from the airport. There's also a communal kitchen, though I didn't use it because I was being fancy in the mini-palace, which had its own private kitchen. The prices are good enough even for someone as cheap as me! There's no AC, but the materials used for the rooms worked so well that mine stayed cool and breezy. I switched from a place with AC, where the room felt humid and stuffy, and was surprised by how comfortable these rooms were without it. Water in Bali isn't potable, but Tagel arranged a delivery to my room at the normal local price and gave me a pump so I could pour it easily and keep it in my fridge. The property backs onto a river and rice fields. Tagel is building rooms there that should have a spectacular view once they're finished.

Had a really good stay. The owner was friendly, and it's close to central Ubud. Highly recommend, and I'd come again.

My one star is for lovely Wayan, the owner's wife, who is so sweet and kind. I paid for five months but left after three nights. The room was prone to mould, including some partly hidden by the bed and furniture. I was there with a nine month old baby, and mould can cause serious health issues. The owner's attitude made things worse. He never apologized and instead asked us to move out in the next couple days. The location is nice and there are some beautiful paintings, but the a/c was noisy.

I rented a room for 14days so I'd have somewhere to come home to while travelling around bali. I slept there only about 5nights altogether, since I stayed in other places on the way, but it was always nice to return. The family are friendly, honest about prices, and helpful with Bali questions and good advice. It felt like a real, typical Balinese homestay, and as a solo traveler I appreciated their help. It's about 850m from the living center of ubud, which made the location ideal for me. Before booking excursions, ask at the homestay, as they'll honestly give you the best price. There's a laundry service about 50m away that I'd recommend too. It costs 15000RP, only 1€ a kilo, and the laundry comes back clean, ironed, and smelling amazing. They have a little cute dog who protects the house but is so sweet once you get to know him 😊 I'd recommend staying here if you want to get a taste of Balinese life in the middle of ubud.
