The personal, attentive service was one of the property’s strengths. Vinod, the friendly, charming owner, is rightly proud of this heritage home and helped arrange a massage, transfers, and a tuk tuk ride around the village. The staff were just as accommodating and gracious. We chose the Venice Heritage room and liked its space and comfortable bed, plus the outdoor bathroom and shower. WiFi and internet were patchy, the only real downside of our stay. I’d somehow missed that the property sits right on the water, despite reading reviews. Free bikes were provided, a little rough around the edges but working, and we enjoyed a couple of leisurely rides along the waterway. There aren’t restaurants nearby, so expect to eat most meals here. Vinod can suggest good places a short tuk tuk ride away, and I heartily recommend Avees for lunch. There aren’t many big sights or activities, which suited me. I spent a lot of time enjoying the lovely grounds and the slow pace of the unspoiled rural surroundings. The food was tasty and plentiful, though I suspect it was adjusted a little for Western tastes. To be fair, I’d just come from two places with some of the most interesting, flavorful meals I’ve ever had. For a quiet stay off the beaten path in the Alleppey backwaters, this is an excellent choice and solid value.

The river access right in front of Emerald Isle Homestay made it incredibly convenient to board kayaks, a shikara, or our pre-booked houseboat. We were served excellent meals under a thatched roof in the courtyard by the genial host Vijo and his friendly staff. The house sits in extensive gardens with ponds, tropical fruit trees, and hammocks, with 400 hectares of rice fields beyond. It’s a 175-year-old farmhouse, its traditional architecture retained even after the accommodations were fully modernized. There’s a spacious indoor shower as well as a private outdoor one. The carved, varnished wood is charming, and the old split bedroom doors, perhaps once used for animals, have elaborate brass locks. They were previously used for storing rice and coconuts. Emerald Isla has been a homestay since 2000 and has won many awards for excellence and preservation of its historic architecture.

We stayed in the deluxe cottage, which had a lovely little plunge pool where you can sit and read. The gardens look out over the paddy fields, and we sat watching kingfishers, eagles, and plenty more. It’s a real gem, quiet and right by the river, with a wonderful atmosphere. The owner and staff are incredibly kind and helpful, and the food is simply delicious. Highly recommend.

We loved the vintage heritage room at Emerald Isle, with its warm, cozy feel. It felt like a proper homestay, and we really enjoyed the delicious home-cooked Kerala food. The grounds are peaceful and serene, a great place to unwind, and they offer authentic Kerala massages on the property. I’d highly recommend staying here to experience the backwaters.

The easy river access directly across from the property made it so convenient: kayaks and even our pre-booked houseboat met us there. The gardens were beautiful, and the food delicious. This serene heritage home has been lovingly created over three generations of one family. Owner Vijo and his attentive staff made sure we had a memorable, enjoyable stay. It was a perfect introduction to the backwaters. Very highly recommended.
