Backpacker Cowies

I spent almost a year at Backpacker Cowies, and it came to feel like home. I'll always remember the friendships and time in the rooftop and common area. Kishan Sir, Anita Ma’am, and Jay at reception deserve special thanks for their warmth and the genuine care they show guests. The Colaba location is excellent, just minutes from the Gateway of India. This is more than a hostel to me.

I wouldn't choose this place again at the same price. Our private room had no window, something the booking site didn't make clear, and for £50 a night it felt stuffy and oppressive. It also needed a better clean: the sheets were stained, there was dust, the toilet was broken, and there was hardly any hot water. When we asked the front desk for cleaning, they were very helpful, but the cleaners we met were rude and seemed to mock us, apparently assuming we couldn't understand them. There are good points. The Colaba location is excellent, a short walk from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and the gateway to India. The rooftop and communal area were great for relaxing, socializing, and remote work. A small kitchen on the 4th floor has snacks, purifier water, tea, and coffee, though it's not clearly signposted. Front desk staff were always friendly and available if we needed anything. Still, I'd recommend finding somewhere more comfortable for the same price.

The place had a good atmosphere and seemed decent for backpackers on a short stay. My private room on the 3rd floor was small and a bit dusty, possibly because of renovation work on the lower floors. The lift wasn't working while I was there, so getting up was a little difficult. The ongoing work made the stay less comfortable, though I think the experience would be much better once it's finished.

I made some lasting friendships here, and it can be a very social hostel if that's what you want. The reception staff were kind, the other guests were lovely, and the rooms had spacious lockers. Bathrooms were generally clean, and filtered water was available all the time. The central location was convenient, though next time I might pick somewhere less touristy, perhaps Bandra. The rooftop is beautiful, with free tea, good WiFi, and space to socialize or work. I look forward to coming back.
