The island’s wide-open views were stunning, with wildflowers across green fields, mountains in the distance, water all around, and huge skies. Traustholtshólmi felt both wild and nurturing, a rare place to get away from the rush of everyday life. We were lucky to stumble into the chance to spend a day there. Hákon took us over in his small boat, and his sweet dog Skuggi greeted us with a wagging tail. Hákon was a thoughtful, gracious host who knew so much about the island. He told us about its history and his efforts to keep traditional ways of living in balance with nature. The island is remarkably self-sufficient, with wild foods, vegetables and herbs grown there, and whatever the river or sea provides that day. For our family, the best moment was when my son helped Hákon catch fresh salmon from the river. By the pier, Hákon cleaned and prepared it as ceviche and sashimi with lemon and soy sauce. It was the freshest sashimi I’ve ever had, and easily the best. Later, we relaxed in the comfortable yurt, with plush beds, cozy blankets, a fire, and a warm atmosphere. Hákon made grilled salmon with tasty sides and a delicious rhubarb dessert. The meal was simple, beautifully prepared, and so satisfying. It was a magical day our family won’t forget. Traustholtshólmi is a place you really feel, not just visit.

I finally got to live another dream and spend a night on beautiful Traustholtshólmi. It was so wonderful! After I left my rental car by the riverbank, Hákon took me across in his boat and showed me my yurt. The yurts are incredibly cozy. There’s no electricity, but there’s a gas stove, towels, and a washbasin to freshen up. The toilets and showers are nearby, and they’re highlights in their own right. I had some time alone before meeting another visitor. Then Hákon and his dog Skuggi showed us around the island, telling us about things like his historic vegetable gardens and the raven’s nest. After the tour, he pulled five salmon from the net at the jetty and let us help. He prepared one for us, first as sashimi, which we ate right there on the jetty. It couldn’t have been fresher. Then he grilled it over an open fire, and we had it with a delicious salad. We ate together in the communal yurt, where a wood-burning stove kept things cozy while we chatted and relaxed. With the midnight sun, it never got dark, and our conversations were so interesting that I had to make myself go to sleep to enjoy the yurt too. The next morning, I had breakfast with the other visitor, who’d just taken a dip in the river. Hákon brought me back by boat at midday. I enjoyed every second and won’t forget the stay, even though it rained on arrival and visibility wasn’t as good as usual. The place has an incredible atmosphere. I want to return!
