Hotel Vellir

The breakfast was the weak point, with a limited selection and some disappointing items, including watery juice and bad coffee. The rooms were spacious and very clean, though sound carried between them because the soundproofing wasn't great. Getting in was easy, even outside normal hours, and arranging everything by message with staff was simple. The location between the airport and Reykjavik makes it convenient to plan travel between the two. I'd readily recommend staying here for that reason.

The room loses a point because the shower didn't drain properly and the TV sometimes lost its signal. Otherwise, we had a great stay. Staff were friendly, accommodating, and quick to answer questions, and breakfast was great. There are two bus stops right by the hotel, a convenient and inexpensive way to get to the capital. Three grocery stores are close by, along with a lovely local hiking trail behind the soccer field.

The rooms are warm and comfortable, and the building is nicely put together and decorated. It was very clean. Breakfast was the one letdown, completely cold and pretty low-end by comparison.

The front desk staff I met were nice, though they weren't around very often. I was disappointed with the hotel, especially since other places I tried in Iceland cost about the same. The online photos look much better than the actual place, and I wouldn't return or recommend it. It's not close to downtown Reykjavík. By bus it's 45 minutes, by car 20-25 according to online information, though the front desk advertises 15 minutes. Breakfast was poor: the juice machine dispensed watered-down juice, there were flies, and nothing tasted fresh, as if it had been made the day before. The rooms had cheap dorm-style furniture. The blackout curtains weren't long enough to block the light, and with so much glass in the building, I wondered if it used to be an office.
