What stood out downstairs was Sumac Mediterranean Bar & Restaurant, with its warm atmosphere, creative cocktails, and excellent staff. The front desk team and restaurant crew were friendly, personal, and professional. The hotel is ION City Hotel, a Member of Design Hotels™, at Laugavegur 28, right in lively central Reykjavík. Its sleek, soulful design blends Icelandic modernism with warm hospitality. Minarc studio designed it, and entrepreneur Sigurlaug Sverrisdóttir founded it. It feels like an urban sibling to the ION Adventure Hotel and is part of Marriott Bonvoy and the Design Hotels™ collection. The rooms were immaculately clean, comfortable, and beautifully designed, giving a calm retreat just steps from shops, cafés, and cultural sites. Getting around was easy too, with a nearby bus stop connecting to the Keflavík Airport shuttle. It’s a great fit for design lovers and travelers after comfort, good food, and Icelandic hospitality downtown.

Virginia at the front desk was very sweet and helpful. The lobby is accessible 24 hours, and the location makes it easy to explore town, with restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops nearby. I’d definitely stay at Ion city again.

The rooms were comfortable and tasteful, and the staff were lovely with 10/10 service. Virgina went so far above and beyond that she should be promoted. The location couldn’t be better: walk out of the hotel and you’re right in the heart of Rejkavic, where you’d otherwise drive to.

I could hear hallway conversations quite loudly through the thin walls, which was the one drawback. Even so, I had a great stay. The staff were lovely, the location was extremely convenient, and the room was cozy and comfortable. The blackout curtains were a plus, and I still think it’s good value for Reykjavik prices.

The room barely fit my daughter and me with our two large and two small suitcases. We ended up using the shower to store luggage. There’s no AC, as you’d expect in most European places, and on the beautiful July day we visited it was about 80°F. The one tiny window only opened a few inches. Loud music and Icelanders celebrating carried on until around 2 a.m., then the trash cleanup crew started until about 3. We had an early flight and essentially got no sleep, even though the bed was extremely comfortable. The noise isn’t the hotel’s fault, but I wish I’d known it could be an issue. I don’t think I’d stay here again. I booked through Marriott as a loyal Titanium Elite member, but that status seemed to mean nothing at this hotel. The location is very central and lively, on a popular pedestrian street with bars, restaurants, and shops. Since cars can’t drive on the street, we had to find paid parking two or three blocks away and haul our luggage over, with no bellman or other help. Parking costs about $15 for each three-hour block between 0900 and 2100, and you have to move the car after each block.
