You can walk, bike, or take a taxi up, and there are plenty of nearby shops where you can get drinks and settle in for the evening. The sunset panorama is the best I’ve seen in Florence, from a huge and beautiful spot. It’s very popular, though, and the evening crowds get massive. I’d come around 5:00 PM to claim a good place.

The setting has a special feel, with hundreds of people gathering before, during, and after sunset to enjoy the live music. On the northwestern stairs, people sit as if in a small amphitheater and listen to singers as the sun goes down. The Piazzale is large, and you can buy souvenirs, fast food, and drinks, though those things aren’t especially different from what you’ll find around the old city. What makes it memorable are the sweeping views across Florence, the Arno, and its many bridges.

The views are stunning, but the crowds can be extreme. At sunset, especially on a weekend, the railing fills up fast and there may be no room left. Get there early if you want a good spot for photos.

We spent a few happy hours sitting here with pizza, listening to the street musicians and even dancing with them. It was easy to get amazing photos from all around. As dusk settled, the city lights gradually came on and the view took on an even more magical feel. Piazzale Michelangelo is a wonderful place to sit, watch Florence, and enjoy the moment for hours.
