Il Vialetto Nei Sassi

Breakfast was a real highlight, with plenty of different dishes and a welcome change from the usual Italian spread. The hotel sits in the old town, which is lovely, but getting there can be awkward: there’s no parking, and you have to haul your bags from a nearby piazza along a narrow cobbled lane and up stairs. That could be difficult if you’re older, have limited strength, or have a disability. Even so, I’d recommend the hotel.

The view across the Sassi was spectacular, and I took the lack of heating as a trade-off for it. We were there with a week-long group tour in the first week of November. Staff were very helpful, and the hotel itself was lovely and well located. They told us the heat wouldn’t come on until mid-November, though we were the last group and they were closing before then. The wool blankets helped, but it was still chilly, especially after a shower. Since most of our group were seniors, some heat would have been appreciated.

The view, the hotel, and Matera itself made the whole stay feel like a dream. The staff at Hotel Sassi were so friendly, and our room was amazing. An unforgettable visit. Thank you for everything.

We stayed right in the heart of Sassi, and sleeping in a cave made it a pretty unique visit. Our place had a sitting room connected to the bedroom, while the bathroom and balcony were down a short flight of stairs. The balcony had a lovely view and was a nice spot to unwind. The bedroom was roomy too, with space for a king bed. I imagine the rooms differ, so other stays may feel different.
