Hotel Artorius

I should have told management about the mattress before checkout, so they didn't get a chance to address it during my stay. Still, it was from 2012, with springs sticking out, and I could barely sleep. The floor was more comfortable. When I pointed it out at checkout and showed the manufacturing date and photos of the springs, the clerk was rude and treated me like a prima donna for suggesting they buy a new mattress. Most of the other staff were polite, helpful and informative. There was also black mold on the shower grout and on the string and ball for the emergency pull. They can call it something else, but it's black mold. I live in San Francisco, ina Victorian home, and deal with mold issues continually. I'm quite proficient at recognizing mold and fungi growth patterns and their impact on mammals. A 14-year-old mattress is ridiculous in a commercial environment.

For the price and location, this is definitely a good option. We could leave our bags and were also able to check in an hour early, which we really appreciated. My one suggestion to management: better pillows.

The location is amazing, close to the Colosseum, but I didn't feel I got my money's worth at the room on 93 Serpenti. The hotel FAQ says the rooms are soundproof, which seems to apply only to the hotel rooms, not the ones they rent at 93 Serpenti. That claim is false advertising. The walls between rooms offer zero soundproofing. Our neighbor was loud until 4:30am on two nights, and after I reported it the first night, staff didn't investigate, so I had to deal with it myself. The room was noisy in other ways too. The fridge made a loud intermittent noise, and using the heat pump caused a very loud, engine-starting sound outside the room that vibrated the wall. I could still hear it easily with earplugs in. The entry door unlocks with a button and makes a loud buzz that carries into the room when a neighbor uses it. I also arranged cleaning through the front desk for day 3 and said I'd be out from 9am to 11am, but the cleaners came at noon, after we had returned. The hotel didn't adequately address my concerns.

My wife and I spent eight days here in December. It was easy to walk to the historic sights from this perfect location, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was excellent. I'd highly recommend the hotel.
