The €12 pass also covers the Roman baths and the main Roman National Historic museum across the road. We were disappointed to find the baths completely closed for a private event from 17th May (today) to 1st June. Nobody mentioned the closure when we bought the ticket, only when we tried to enter. The courtyard is beautiful, with four well-preserved sides, each 100m long. It’s said to have been designed by the great Michaelangelo in his later years, and there are gorgeous sculptures and animal figures. There’s a huge magnolia tree at one end. Upstairs in the museum, the oval windows give you a lovely view and some great photo opportunities.

The original baths are incredible in scale, and the museum is interesting and well arranged. There’s also an incredible exhibition of sculptor Tony Cragg’s work on at the moment, which makes the Baths of Diocletion especially worth seeing. They’re right by Termini station, so getting there is easy.

The porticoes have old exhibits spread along them, but without someone explaining the text, I found them a bit boring. Inside the museum there’s more detail and plenty of interesting objects, including lots of very old tombstones with explanations. There’s a lot to see, and going through it all takes a long time.
